| Ferrari Dominates the Top Sellers List in Monterey | |
In August, RM Auctions returned to Monterey to host the 23rd annual Sports & Classics of Monterey, which highlighted over 170 historic sports and racing cars, luxurious classics, exotic customs, and raucous hot rods. When the hammer fell for the last time on Saturday night, bidding had passed the seven-figure-mark 11 times, achieving over $44 million in total sales. Ferrari enthusiasts witnessed 24 milestone Ferraris cross the auction block, including the top-selling 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta, which drew $4.51 million. The many historic racing cars included the first Porsche 935/78 “Moby Dick”, built by the Reinhold Joest and driven by Jochen Mass, selling for $550,000. Exotic cars included no less than three examples of the Lamborghini Miura supercar, while an incredible 1933 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Special Town Car represented classic cars, bringing $2.31 million. As always, the wide and varied selection of automobiles provided something for everyone in attendance. We look forward to next year"s event and as always, invite high-quality consignments for Monterey"s original collector car auction. | |
